Taxi Charges

There are two types of taxis according to the way they charge for a route:
– The (well known) taxis, having a taxi meter that caclulates the cost of the route, based on distance and waiting time. You will find them in all major cities in Greece
– and the (marketable) ‘agoreo’ (in Greek) taxi, usually found in villages, small cities or islands. In these taxis there is normally a predifned (in sign) pricelist for the most common routes, or you agociate the price for the ride with the taxi driver for a route that is not already written.

For the first category, the taxi meter cab, where the cost for a route is not predetermined, the final price for your ride is a calculated by the taxi meter like this; for as long as the car moves, the charge is based on the mileage. When it is stopped (traffic jam / traffic lights) the charge is changing to a time basis. If you are (or get) outside the city limits or the late night hours, the charge is higher (pricelist / tariff 2). Usually, this change (due night time or city limits) does not occur automatically but is triggered by the taxi driver when is needed. Just make keep in mind and make sure, that they are also changed back to lower pricelist (tariff 1) when appropriate. The cost per kilometer, the charge per hour, the single and double tariff price, are set by the Ministry of Transport. You can find it the latest and most updated pricelist currently in use in our site, as well.

Extra charges

There are additional charges for taxis in several specific cases and in well determined cost (also defined by the Ministry of Transport and included in the detailed taxi pricelist). These cases usually are:Transportation to and from airports, ports, train and bus stations, call / appointment via radio taxi, baggages. It is also likely on holiday season, to charge an extra fee called gift of Easter – Christmas – New Year accordingly.

Sample / indicative routes and prices

We would all agree that for someone outside the country is it rather difficult to calculate distance, traffic / waiting time, and verify the final price that the cab driver will ask. Therefore, there is a growing trend in locations of massive public transportation (airports – port) and where people are often use or call a taxi (eg, a hotel’s front desk), to have available some indicative prices for routine routes by taxi. Another thing you can do, especially if you know where you want to go before taking a cab is ask the information on the departure or arrival point (eg at the airport or your hotel) for an estimated cost for that ride. It is good to keep in mind that there is a different rate / charging between day and night time due to night tariff so in night expect to pay a bit more than usual. No matter what, we have compile a short list with indicated routes and costs for you.

Detailed price list

The price list / tariff charges for taxi fares are decided and announced by the Ministry of Transportation and includes all prices charged for each kilometer and tariff, the extra charges, upper and lower limits, the flag drop (initial charge), where they are needed.
